mr. john doleeva, hall of fame executive ***mittee, ladies and gentlemen, good evening.

when i heard that i was speaking first tonight, i thought that someone made a mistake. the first speaker should be the great allen iverson. i need practice more than he does.

first of all, i would like to thank you for giving me this great honor. your recognition has made tonight a most memorable moment for me. although perhaps my career ended too soon, for me i treasure each and every moment.

i am grateful for my time on the court, and for your recognition tonight.

i would like to thank my sponsors:

bill russell. i will never f***et that you invited me to dinner at your house in seattle when i was a young rookie. that evening, and all of your advice since, really built up my confidence and made me feel ***fortable in a new country.

bill walton. you supported me all the way. thank you for your advice and encouragement.

you were the first one who called me when i woke up from my foot surgery. you told me to stay positive. i will never f***et that.

dikembe mutombo. i put you last because you are the oldest of the three. we played together for 5 years and had so many memories on and off the court.

nothing can break the bond between us, not even all those elbows you gave me in practice.

as you know, i am from china and my journey began there.

my parents were basketball players back in the 1970’s. i heard so many great stories about them, about how they played and how good they were. more importantly, so many people know how good they are as people.

i am very fortunate to be your son. the gift i had from you was not only height. it was much more.

you taught me how to think, how to make decisions. and of course my soft touch on the free throw line. which is why i am about 10,000 free throws less than shaq.

my wife li. we met when we were high school age. you know how much you mean to me.

thank you for being my life partner. our lovely daughter amy is a treasure to both of us. we wish she could be here, but she is in her first week at school.

and she has to live with the consequence of choosing soccer over basketball.

my basketball journey began on the back of coach li zhangmin's bicycle when he gave me a ride to my very first practice on the basketball court. i would like to congratulate you on a great career as you retire this year. so many kids have benefited from you and your work.

coach li qiuping you were my coach at the shanghai sharks. you led us to the cba championship, and never gave up on us, even when you lost your wife to cancer that year. thank you for your dedication and your sacrifices to us.

i want to thank the city of shanghai, shanghai sharks and the cba league did everything they could to prepare me. they raised me, trained me and helped me to be ready for the next challenges in my life.

there is old saying in china that if the mirror is made of bronze, one can dress properly, if the mirror is history, one can predict ups and downs, if the mirror is people, one can reflect on one's own weakness and strength. and now, i would like to mention a few mirrors in my life.

i want to mention mr. mou zouyun. he was a basketball legend.

over 80 years ago, mr. mou came here to springfield to study basketball. he went back to china and dedicated his life to chinese basketball.

today, the cba championship cup is named after him. this cup is the life goal that every cba player can dream of.

i am not the first chinese man to play in the nba. that honor belongs wang zhi zhi. he was a pioneer for all future chinese players who dream of ***ing to the nba.

he cleared the road for us and made so many sacrifices. i learned so much from him. although he cannot be here today, i want to thank him.

many people know the story that began when the rockets drafted me in xx. not many people know how much effort the rockets put in before i arrived and throughout my career. thank you to les alexander, michael goldberg, carroll dawson, tad brown, daryl morey and keith jones for ****** me feel at home in houston.

when i arrived in houston on my first day, steve francis gave me a strong high five and a big hug to wel***e me. steve has been the perfect big brother to me ever since that day. cutino mobley invited me to his home for something called soul food.

i thought he meant salty food. thank you to steve, cutino and everyone on my early rockets teams for ****** me feel so wel***e.

rudy t. is famous for saying “never underestimate the heart of a champion.” rudy has demonstrated this not only on the court, but off the court too, especially in his battle with cancer.

rudy, you have always inspired me to be the best that i can be.

when jeff van gundy arrived with patrick ewing and tom thibideau, that coaching staff turned us into a tough defensive team, like he always does.

with t-mac, shane battier, rafer alston, we became a talented young team especially with dikembe. that team was not only ***petitive, but a team with a brotherhood.

i all ways remember coach van gundy said once that the best chance also could be your last. that is true in basketball and in life.

my last nba coach was rick adelman. he helped us develop so many talented players like carl landry, luis scola and aaron brooks. we had a great run in xx/xx, but unfortunately my injury cut things short and ended my time with the rockets too soon.

i will always remember my time spent with the houston rockets as some of the best times in my life.

as a basketball player, i was one of the most blessed players on the pla***. i played against some of the best athletes in the world. a great athlete not only has great teammates, but great opponents.

great opponents push us forward. opponents like shaquille o’neal. shaq every game we played reminded me of the old saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

” thank you for that

i consider houston my second home so i want to say something to the people of houston. you stood by me in good and bad times. you gave me strength to move forward.

i will always consider you my family. i am a texan and a houston rocket for life.

all of this would not be possible without the vision of david stern and the nba. thank you to david stern, adam silver, kim bohuny and everyone at the nba for your kindness and support.

finally, to team yao. erik zhang, bill duffy, bill sanders, billy kuenzinge, larry zhang and lu hao. we all look older and fatter than we first met.

ladies and gentlemen, i like to pay my respect to dr. nai**ith, to the to the 345 previous members of the hall of fame, and to everyone who has contributed to the game of basketball all over the world in last 125 years.

all of these individuals are stars and together they form the galaxy in the universe of basketball. the game has inspired billions of people around the world. as one of them, i will do my part to continue to help grow the great game of basketball and we all look forward to watching the stars of tomorrow emerge and shine.

thank you for this great honor.

ideal is the life of the sun, the sun does not shine, the role of life, the earth will be***e a stone. for man, without ideal is no soul.

russian writer lev tolstoy said: "ideal is the beacon. without ideal, there is no secure direction; without direction, there is no life.

" zhang wentian said: the ideal of life is to live an ideal life.

british psychologist and educator fleming said: "once people lose lose ideal, the pursuit of spirit, human beings have be***e ignorance, society will also be***e pitch-dark." the ideal is a kind of consciousness which is formed by belief, belief, morality, responsibility, fashion and habit.

it directly controls the direction and effect of one's practical activities.

as china's famous poet liushahe said:

ideal is stone, knock out sparks of fire;

ideal is fire, lit the lights out;

the ideal is a lamp to illuminate the road ahead;

ideal is the road that leads you to the dawn.

some people in the world have abandoned the ideal,

ideals never abandon anyone.

ordinary people are great because they have ideals;

an ideal person is a capital man".

理想是石,敲出星星之火;

理想是火,点燃熄灭的灯;

理想是灯,照亮夜行的路;

平凡的人因有理想而伟大;

we often hear people say, "never give up." it may be to encourage others, or to express their resolve. believe in yourself, no matter how many times you fail, you will keep trying to reach your goal.

in my opinion, the determination to succeed is an important trait that everyone should have. so i think we should never give up.

one reason is that if we give up too easily, we can hardly do anything. it is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at something new, so we should not feel discouraged and should try again. besides, if we always give up when we fail, we can't develop new skills and grow up.

another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes only if we work hard again. if we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted. finally, we should never give up because when we work hard to achieve our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence will help us succeed in other areas of our lives.

if we don't challenge ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.

in short, it is important that we never give up when we try our best to achieve our goal. whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will make us a better and more confident person. furthermore, if we give up, we will have no chance to reach the goal.

but if we keep trying, one day we will have a chance to succeed.

let me begin by thanking you, mr. levin, for your kind invitation and the opportunity to ***e to yale to meet young friends and teachers of this world-renowned(1)university.

***ing to the yale campus, with its distinctive(2)academic flavor, and looking at the eager young faces in the audience, i cannot but recall my great experience studying at qinghua university in beijing 40 years ago. indeed, what happens during one s school year will influence his whole life. i still benefit greatly from the instruction and my interaction with other students.

yale is renowned for its long history, unique way of teaching and excellence in academic pursuit. if time could go back several decades, i would really like to be a student of yale just like you.

yale s motto “light and truth,” which is a calling for human progress, represents the aspiration of every motivated young man and woman. over the past three centuries, yale has produced a galaxy of outstanding figures, including 20 nobel laureates and five american presidents. the words of nathan hale, an american hero and yale alumnus(3), “i only regret that i have but one life to lose for my country,” have also inspired me and many other chinese.

mr. john doleeva, hall of fame executive ***mittee, ladies and gentlemen, good evening.

when i heard that i was speaking first tonight, i thought that someone made a mistake. the first speaker should be the great allen iverson. i need practice more than he does.

first of all, i would like to thank you for giving me this great honor. your recognition has made tonight a most memorable moment for me. although perhaps my career ended too soon, for me i treasure each and every moment.

i am grateful for my time on the court, and for your recognition tonight.

i would like to thank my sponsors:

bill russell. i will never f***et that you invited me to dinner at your house in seattle when i was a young rookie. that evening, and all of your advice since, really built up my confidence and made me feel ***fortable in a new country.

bill walton. you supported me all the way. thank you for your advice and encouragement.

you were the first one who called me when i woke up from my foot surgery. you told me to stay positive. i will never f***et that.

dikembe mutombo. i put you last because you are the oldest of the three. we played together for 5 years and had so many memories on and off the court.

nothing can break the bond between us, not even all those elbows you gave me in practice.

as you know, i am from china and my journey began there.

my parents were basketball players back in the 1970’s. i heard so many great stories about them, about how they played and how good they were. more importantly, so many people know how good they are as people.

i am very fortunate to be your son. the gift i had from you was not only height. it was much more.

you taught me how to think, how to make decisions. and of course my soft touch on the free throw line. which is why i am about 10,000 free throws less than shaq.

my wife li. we met when we were high school age. you know how much you mean to me.

thank you for being my life partner. our lovely daughter amy is a treasure to both of us. we wish she could be here, but she is in her first week at school.

and she has to live with the consequence of choosing soccer over basketball.

my basketball journey began on the back of coach li zhangmin's bicycle when he gave me a ride to my very first practice on the basketball court. i would like to congratulate you on a great career as you retire this year. so many kids have benefited from you and your work.

coach li qiuping you were my coach at the shanghai sharks. you led us to the cba championship, and never gave up on us, even when you lost your wife to cancer that year. thank you for your dedication and your sacrifices to us.

i want to thank the city of shanghai, shanghai sharks and the cba league did everything they could to prepare me. they raised me, trained me and helped me to be ready for the next challenges in my life.

there is old saying in china that if the mirror is made of bronze, one can dress properly, if the mirror is history, one can predict ups and downs, if the mirror is people, one can reflect on one's own weakness and strength. and now, i would like to mention a few mirrors in my life.

i want to mention mr. mou zouyun. he was a basketball legend.

over 80 years ago, mr. mou came here to springfield to study basketball. he went back to china and dedicated his life to chinese basketball.

today, the cba championship cup is named after him. this cup is the life goal that every cba player can dream of.

i am not the first chinese man to play in the nba. that honor belongs wang zhi zhi. he was a pioneer for all future chinese players who dream of ***ing to the nba.

he cleared the road for us and made so many sacrifices. i learned so much from him. although he cannot be here today, i want to thank him.

many people know the story that began when the rockets drafted me in xx. not many people know how much effort the rockets put in before i arrived and throughout my career. thank you to les alexander, michael goldberg, carroll dawson, tad brown, daryl morey and keith jones for ****** me feel at home in houston.

when i arrived in houston on my first day, steve francis gave me a strong high five and a big hug to wel***e me. steve has been the perfect big brother to me ever since that day. cutino mobley invited me to his home for something called soul food.

i thought he meant salty food. thank you to steve, cutino and everyone on my early rockets teams for ****** me feel so wel***e.

rudy t. is famous for saying “never underestimate the heart of a champion.” rudy has demonstrated this not only on the court, but off the court too, especially in his battle with cancer.

rudy, you have always inspired me to be the best that i can be.

when jeff van gundy arrived with patrick ewing and tom thibideau, that coaching staff turned us into a tough defensive team, like he always does.

with t-mac, shane battier, rafer alston, we became a talented young team especially with dikembe. that team was not only ***petitive, but a team with a brotherhood.

i all ways remember coach van gundy said once that the best chance also could be your last. that is true in basketball and in life.

my last nba coach was rick adelman. he helped us develop so many talented players like carl landry, luis scola and aaron brooks. we had a great run in xx/xx, but unfortunately my injury cut things short and ended my time with the rockets too soon.

i will always remember my time spent with the houston rockets as some of the best times in my life.

as a basketball player, i was one of the most blessed players on the pla***. i played against some of the best athletes in the world. a great athlete not only has great teammates, but great opponents.

great opponents push us forward. opponents like shaquille o’neal. shaq every game we played reminded me of the old saying “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

" zhang wentian said: the ideal of life is to live an ideal life.

british psychologist and educator fleming said: "once people lose lose ideal, the pursuit of spirit, human beings have be***e ignorance, society will also be***e pitch-dark." the ideal is a kind of consciousness which is formed by belief, belief, morality, responsibility, fashion and habit.

it directly controls the direction and effect of one's practical activities.

as china's famous poet liushahe said:

ideal is stone, knock out sparks of fire;

ideal is fire, lit the lights out;

the ideal is a lamp to illuminate the road ahead;

ideal is the road that leads you to the dawn.

some people in the world have abandoned the ideal,

ideals never abandon anyone.

ordinary people are great because they have ideals;

an ideal person is a capital man".

理想是石,敲出星星之火;

理想是火,点燃熄灭的灯;

理想是灯,照亮夜行的路;

平凡的人因有理想而伟大;

we often hear people say, "never give up." it may be to encourage others, or to express their resolve. believe in yourself, no matter how many times you fail, you will keep trying to reach your goal.

in my opinion, the determination to succeed is an important trait that everyone should have. so i think we should never give up.

one reason is that if we give up too easily, we can hardly do anything. it is not unusual for us to fail in our first attempt at something new, so we should not feel discouraged and should try again. besides, if we always give up when we fail, we can't develop new skills and grow up.

another reason we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes only if we work hard again. if we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted. finally, we should never give up because when we work hard to achieve our goals, we develop confidence, and this confidence will help us succeed in other areas of our lives.

if we don't challenge ourselves, we will begin to doubt our abilities.

in short, it is important that we never give up when we try our best to achieve our goal. whether we succeed in the end or not, we will learn something, and what we learn will make us a better and more confident person. furthermore, if we give up, we will have no chance to reach the goal.

but if we keep trying, one day we will have a chance to succeed.

let me begin by thanking you, mr. levin, for your kind invitation and the opportunity to ***e to yale to meet young friends and teachers of this world-renowned(1)university.

***ing to the yale campus, with its distinctive(2)academic flavor, and looking at the eager young faces in the audience, i cannot but recall my great experience studying at qinghua university in beijing 40 years ago. indeed, what happens during one s school year will influence his whole life. i still benefit greatly from the instruction and my interaction with other students.

yale is renowned for its long history, unique way of teaching and excellence in academic pursuit. if time could go back several decades, i would really like to be a student of yale just like you.

i sincerely hope that yale will produce more talent and contribute further to the social and economic development of the united states and the cause of human progress.

ladies and gentlemen, dear friends.

the chinese and americans have always had an intense(4)spirit of the americans and their proud achievement in national development. as china develops rapidly and steady headway is made in china-u.s.

cooperation, more and more americans are following with great interest china s progress and development.

understanding leads to trust. today, i would like to speak to you about china s development strategy and its future against the backdrop(背景)of the evolution of the chinese civilization and china s current development endeavor. i hope this will help you gain a better understanding of china.

in a history that spans more than five millennia, the chinese nation has contributed significantly to the progress of human civilization. but its course of national development has been an arduous(5) one. in particular in the 160 years and more since the opium war in 1840, the chinese people have fought courageously and unyieldingly to rid themselves of poverty and backwardness(n.

落后(状态)) and to realize national rejuvenation(n. 返老还童;回春), thus profoundly changing the destiny of the chinese nation. ni***y-five years ago, the chinese people launched the revolution of 1911 that overthrew(打倒;推翻;废除) the feudal autocracy which had ruled china for several thousand years and opened the door to china s progress.

fifty-seven years ago, the chinese people succeeded in winning liberation after protracted and hard struggle and founded new china in which people became their own masters. twenty-eight years ago, the chinese people embarked upon the historic drive of reform, opening-up and modernization and have made phenomenal progress through unremitting(6) efforts.

between 1978 and 2005, china s gdp grew from $147.3 billion to $2.2257 trillion.

its import and export volume went up from $20.6 billion to $1.4221 trillion and its foreign exchange reserve soared from $167 million to $818.

9 billion. during this period, the number of its poor rural population dropped from 250 million to 23 million. the above review of the profound changes in these 160 years shows one thing, namely, by carrying out persistent and hard struggle, the chinese people have both changed their own destiny and advanced the cause of human progress.

on the other hand, i need to point out that, despite the success in its development, china remains the world s largest developing country, with per capita gdp ranking behind the 100th place. the chinese people are yet to live a well-off life and china still faces daunting (7)challenges in its development endeavor. therefore it requires sustained and unremitting efforts to transform the country and make life better for its people.

in the next 15 years, we will strive to make new progress in building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way that will benefit china s one billion and more population.

we aim to raise china s gdp to $4 trillion by 2020, averaging $3,000 per person. by then, china s economy will be better developed and its democracy will be further enhanced. more progress will be made in science and education.

its culture will be further enriched, the society will be***e more harmonious and the people will lead a better life.

to realize these goals, china has adopted a new concept of development in line with its national conditions and the requirement of the times. that is, to pursue a scientific outlook on development that makes economic and social development people-oriented, ***prehensive, balanced and sustainable. we will work to strike a proper balance between urban and rural development, development among regions, economic and social development, development of man and nature, and domestic development and opening wider to the outside world.

greater emphasis will be put on addressing issues affecting people s livelihood, over***ing imbalances in development and resolving key problems that have occurred in the course of development. we will pursue a new path to industrialization featuring high technology, good economic returns, low resource-consumption, low environment pollution and full use of human resources. we will bring about coordinated economic, political, cultural and social development.

and we will endeavor to ensure sustainable development by boosting production, improving people s life and protecting the environment.

this concept of scientific development is based on the experience china has gained in its modernization drive and put forth in response to the trends of the times. it is also rooted in the cultural heritages of the chinese nation.

the chinese civilization is one that has continued uninterrupted for more than 5,000 years. the distinct cultural tradition of the chinese nation that developed in the long course of history has exerted a strong influence on contemporary china, just as it did on ancient china. putting people first, keeping pace with the times, maintaining social harmony and pursuing peaceful development:

these values that are being pursued in china today are derived from its tradition. but they also give expression to the progress of the times.

the chinese civilization has always given prominence to the people and respect for people s dignity and value. centuries ago, the chinese already pointed out that “people are the foundation of a country; when the foundation is stable, the country is in peace.” nothing is more valuable in the universe than human beings.

the ancient chinese emphasized the value of serving the people, enriching them, nourishing them, and benefiting them. we are pursuing today a people-oriented approach toward development because we believe that development must be for the people and by the people and its benefit should be shared among the people.

we care about people s value, rights and interests and freedom, the quality of their life, and their development potential and happiness index because our goal is to realize the all-around development of the people. ensuring the right to survival and development remains china s top priority. we will vigorously promote social and economic development, protect people s freedom, democracy and human rights according to law, achieve social fairness and justice and enable the 1.

3 billion chinese people to live a happy life.

the chinese civilization has always given prominence to unremitting self-improvement, reform and innovation. as an ancient chinese motto puts it, “as heaven keeps vigor through movement, a gentleman should unremittingly practice self-improvement.” throughout its 5,000-year history, it is thanks to their perseverance, determination, stamina(n.

精力,活力) and adversity. the chinese people have shown enterprising spirit and reform and opening-up creativity in national development and great tenacity([ ti'nsiti ] n. 固执,不屈不挠,顽固) in over***ing difficulties on the road to progress.

and all this gives expression to the spirit of unremitting self-improvement embodied in china s cultural tradition.

the chinese civilization has always given prominence to social harmony, unity and mutual assistance. back in the early days of the chinese nation, the chinese already advocated that “harmony is most valuable.” they strove for harmony between man and nature, among people and between man s body and soul, and yearned for an ideal society where “everyone loves everyone else, everyone is equal and the whole world is one ***munity.

”today, china is endeavoring to build a harmonious society. it is a society of democracy and rule of law, fairness and justice, integrity, fraternity(8), vitality(vitality: [ vai'tliti ] n.

活力,生命力), stability, order and harmony between man and nature. it is a society where there is unity between the material and the spirit, democracy and rule of law, fairness and efficiency, and vitality and order.

the chinese people takes [sic] the maintenance of ethnic unity and harmony as their bounden duty and the defense of the country s sovereignty and territorial integrity their sacred mission.

any act that promoted ethnic harmony and national unity will receive the warm wel***e and support of the chinese people. on the other hand, any act that undermines china s ethnic harmony and national unity will meet their strong opposition and resistance.

the chinese civilization has always given prominence to good neighborliness. the chinese nation cherishes peace. in foreign relations, the chinese have always believed that “the strong should not oppress the weak and the rich should not bully the poor” and advocated that “all nations live side by side in perfect harmony.

”the chinese held that “one should be as inclusive as the ocean, which is vast because it admits hundreds of rivers” and called for drawing upon the strength of others. today, china holds high the banner of peace, development and cooperation. it pursues an independent foreign policy of peace and ***mits itself firmly to peaceful development.

it seeks to accelerate its development by upholding(支撑,赞成,鼓励) world peace. the world peace is, in turn, enhanced by china s development. china firmly pursues a strategy of opening-up for mutual benefit and win-win out***es.

it genuinely wishes to enter into extensive cooperation with other countries. it is inclusive and is eager to draw on the strength of other civilizations to pursue peace and development through cooperation and play its part in building a harmonious world of enduring peace and ***mon prosperity.

ladies and gentlemen, dear friends.

china and the united states are both countries of vast territory where many ethnic groups coexist and different cultures intermingle. both our two peoples are hard-working and talented. due to different historical backgrounds and national conditions, there are differences between china and the united states.

against this backdrop, the ***mon interests between our two countries are increasing and the areas of our cooperation widening. global peace and security now face new challenges, such as fighting international terrori**, preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, protecting the environment and human habitat and ***bating transnational crimes. and it is exactly in these fields that we share important strategic interests.

china has a huge market and its development has generated strong demand, while the united states has advanced technology and high quality products. this has created enormous opportunities for economic and technical cooperation between our two countries. indeed, there is a broad prospect for the growth of constructive and cooperative china-u.

a ***poser cannot write enchanting melody with one note, and a painter cannot paint landscape with only one color. the world is a treasure house where the unique cultural achievements created by people of all countries are displayed. the culture of a nation tells a lot about the evolution of the nation s understanding of the world and life, both past and present.

culture thus embodies a nation s fundamental pursuit of mind and dictates its norms of behavior. the historical process of human development is one in which different civilizations interact with and enrich each other and all civilizations in human history have contributed to human progress in their own unique way.

cultural diversity is a basic feature of both human society and today s world and an important driving force for human progress. as history has shown, in the course of interactions between civilizations, we not only need to remove natural barriers and over***e physical isolation, we also need to remove obstacles and obstructions of the mind and over***e various prejudices and misunderstandings. differences in ideology(观念形态,意识形态), social system and development model should not stand in the way of exchanges among civilizations, still less should they be***e excuses for mutual confrontation.

we should uphold the diversity of the world, enhance dialogue and interaction between civilizations, and draw on each other s strength instead of practicing mutual exclusion. when this is done, mankind will enjoy greater harmony and happiness and the world will be***e a more colorful place to live in.

thanksgiving day is the most truly american of the national holidays in the united states and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country.

in 1620, the settlers, or pilgrims, they sailed to america on the may flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. after a tempestuous two-month voyage they landed at in icy november, what is now plymouth, massachusetts.

during their first winter, over half of the settlers died of[1] starvation or epidemics. those who survived began sowing in the first spring.

all summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future existence of the colony depended on the ing harvest. finally the fields produced a yield rich beyond expectations. and therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the lord be fixed[2].

years later, president of the united states proclaimed the fourth thursday of november as thanksgiving day every year. the celebration of thanksgiving day has been observed on that date until today.

the pattern of the thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. the big family dinner is planned months ahead. on the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes.

there will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of food and cranberry juice and squash. the best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. they have been the most traditional and favorite food on thanksgiving day throughout the years.

everyone agrees the dinner must be built around roast turkey stuffed with a bread dressing[3] to absorb the tasty juices as it roasts. but as cooking varies with families and with the regions where one lives, it is not easy to get a consensus on[4] the precise kind of stuffing for the royal bird.

thanksgiving today is, in every sense, a national annual holiday on which americans of all faiths and backgrounds join in to express their thanks for the year' s bounty and reverently ask for continued blessings.

thanksgiving day is the most truly american of the national holidays in the united states and is most closely connected with the earliest history of the country.

in 1620, the settlers, or pilgrims, they sailed to america on the may flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. after a tempestuous two-month voyage they landed at in icy november, what is now plymouth, massachusetts.

during their first winter, over half of the settlers died of[1] starvation or epidemics. those who survived began sowing in the first spring.

all summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future existence of the colony depended on the ing harvest. finally the fields produced a yield rich beyond expectations. and therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the lord be fixed[2].

years later, president of the united states proclaimed the fourth thursday of november as thanksgiving day every year. the celebration of thanksgiving day has been observed on that date until today.

the pattern of the thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. the big family dinner is planned months ahead. on the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes.

there will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of food and cranberry juice and squash. the best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. they have been the most traditional and favorite food on thanksgiving day throughout the years.

everyone agrees the dinner must be built around roast turkey stuffed with a bread dressing[3] to absorb the tasty juices as it roasts. but as cooking varies with families and with the regions where one lives, it is not easy to get a consensus on[4] the precise kind of stuffing for the royal bird.

thanksgiving today is, in every sense, a national annual holiday on which americans of all faiths and backgrounds join in to express their thanks for the year' s bounty and reverently ask for continued blessings.
